Formula 1 has revealed its 23-race provisional calendar for the 2022 season. The schedule features two triple header events and the long-awaited addition of the Miami Grand Prix.
The provisional dates for Formula 1’s 2022 calendar have been announced. The 2022 season will begin with the Bahrain Grand Prix on March 20 and play out over 23 rounds, ending with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 20.

A record 23 races
Formula 1 had hoped to have a record-breaking 23 races in the 2021 season, However, the coronavirus pandemic necessitated the cancellation of a number of rounds and the number of races dropped to 22. While F1 is still expected to break the record for most races in a single season in 2021 with 22 rounds, the sport will go one better next year with the addition of the Miami Grand Prix.
Furthermore, Sprint Qualifying is expected to make a return in 2022. The new weekend format was introduced at the 2021 British Grand Prix and a further Sprint event was held at the Italian Grand Prix. It is believed that there will be up to six Sprint Qualifying weekends next season.
First Miami Grand Prix to take place in May
As announced recently, the inaugural Miami Grand Prix is scheduled to take place in early May. The race will take place around the Hard Rock Stadium on May 6-8 and is expected to draw a large crowd, with considerable interest already registered in the event.

Australia, Canada, Singapore & Japan set to return
After two years off the calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic, some of Formula 1’s most popular fly-away events are set to make their return in 2022. The Australian Grand Prix moves to an April slot, with Albert Park in Melbourne hosting what was previously the traditional season-opening race on April 10.
Canada and Japan also return to the schedule in June and October respectively, while the Singapore Grand Prix makes a welcome return on October 2. The Marina Bay Street Circuit was out of contract at the end of 2021 but makes a comeback despite uncertainty over the long-term future of the event.
Imola returns, China is left off the 2022 schedule
One race which will not return to the schedule in 2022 is the Chinese Grand Prix. F1 last raced at Shanghai International Circuit when the sport celebrated its 1,000th World Championship race in 2019. The 2020 race was the first to be called off due to the pandemic. It will not go ahead again in 2022 due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions.
Instead, Imola will host the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix for a third successive year. The Italian circuit – which was originally on the schedule from 1980 to 2006 – returned to the calendar in 2020. Like the 2021 event, the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will take place in April. It will be the fourth round of the season on April 22-24.
Two triple headers
In addition to seven sets of back-to-back race weekends in 2022, next season will also feature two sets of triple header events. Just like in 2021, the Belgian, Dutch and Italian Grands Prix will take place on consecutive race weekends to kick off the second half of the season. The Dutch Grand Prix remains in an early September slot, despite rumours that the event would become the first European race on the 2022 schedule.
The other triple header will take place at the next three rounds of the championship: the Russian, Singapore and Japanese Grands Prix. Next year’s Russian Grand Prix will be F1’s last visit to Sochi Autodrom before the event moves to Igora Drive in 2023.
No F1 action on Thursday at the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix
In a break with long-standing tradition, there will be no on-track F1 action on Thursday over the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix weekend. Instead, the Monaco Grand Prix weekend falls in line with the other events on the calendar, with Free Practice taking place on Friday.

The Monaco race weekend will take place on the final weekend of May, another break with tradition, having previously been run on the third weekend of the month. Tickets and F1 Experiences packages for the event are already available.

It’s worth noting that at this stage, all dates for the 2022 Formula 1 season are provisional. The calendar is subject to confirmation by the FIA’s World Motorsports Council.
