Shanghai has an excellent range of accommodation and prices for good quality hotels are reasonable by international standards. Being such a big city, you also won’t be so impacted by the dreaded ‘F1 tax’ which increases hotel prices so much in many other F1 cities. Although there are plenty of hotels close to the Shanghai circuit, we recommend staying in central Shanghai and taking the metro to the track each day.
Accommodation Near Shanghai International Circuit
The Shanghai International Circuit is located in the Jiading district, approximately 30km north west of the city centre. If you are coming solely for the Grand Prix, staying closer to the circuit will save you both money and time spent commuting from other parts of the city. Choices are limited in Jiading however, so you will need to book early. Alternatively, the city center is well connected to the circuit by metro and there’s plenty to keep you busy after a day at the track.
We recommend the Holiday Inn Express Jiading Industry Park, which is 10km from the circuit and is new and modern, and the Courtyard by Marriott Shanghai Jiading, which is 7km from the circuit. The Jiading district includes a great deal which anyone who has an interest in traditional Chinese culture will want to visit. The historic Quixia Garden, and Jiading Fahua Tower (which marks a beautiful pagoda) are just a short taxi ride from the circuit and are both well worth a few hours of your time to explore. Jiading Old Town is a step back in time from Shanghai, and will show you a very different China to the one you may have seen on your way from the airport.
Where to Stay in Downtown Shanghai
People’s Square
A large number of hotels are located close to a metro station so you can easily get to the Shanghai International Circuit each day (and to/from the airport). Of the luxury accommodation available, The Yangtze Boutique, Shanghai is 30m from the People’s Square Metro Station (Lines 1, 2 and 8), and surrounded by dining, shopping and entertainment, including Nanjing Road and People’s Park. Many of the rooms have balconies with views of Shanghai’s skyline.
Nanjing Road
Nanjing Road is a must-see if you have time to spend in Shanghai – Nanjing East Road is a pedestrianized shopping area, one of the world’s busiest, with every global brand represented, along with some collectable curiosities you’re likely to only find in China. Nanjing West Road is a high-end luxury street with designer brands’ stores vying for space with some of the most expensive commercial real estate in China. If you want to stay on Nanjing Road, Crowne Plaza Shanghai Nanjing Road is an unbeatable option.
The Bund
The Bund, known to many in China as ‘the Museum of Buildings’, represents a contrast to that modern excess, with its culturally preserved buildings dating back to colonial times, when Shanghai began to gain its reputation as a global trading hub. Stroll the waterfront and take in the history. If you’re tired of doing things on foot, consider a Huangpu River Cruise – this is the most laid-back way to explore the varied and storied history of Shanghai, and of China. For a taste of the 1930s modernist architecture that used to dominate Shanghai, head to the Metropolo Classiq, Shanghai Bund Circle, which has unique semicircle concave architecture, and is about as far from your average big-box luxury hotel as you can get.
To get to the Shanghai International Circuit from the center of Shanghai, you need to take Line 11 of the Metro, making sure you are moving heading towards Huaqiao, rather than North Jiading. The circuit has its own station. More info about getting to the circuit is here.
