It’s hard to avoid the ‘F1 tax’ for accommodation on Grand Prix weekend in Montreal, but the good news is that it’s a big city with plenty of places to stay for fans on all budgets. As always, it pays to book well in advance. With the Grand Prix taking place on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, on Ile Notre-Dame, which is to the east of the main island containing most of Montreal, you want to try and plan your accommodation choices around ease of access to the circuit, which is linked by bridges over the St. Lawrence River. 

With an efficient metro and public transport system, most central areas of Montreal are worth considering for your Grand Prix accommodation, especially downtown near the Berri UQAM interchange metro station, which is just one stop from the circuit. Other areas worth considering include Old Montreal and the hipster enclave of Plateau Mont Royal, where you will find lots of cool cafes, restaurants and bars. If you want to keep costs down, don’t discount staying on the eastern side of the St Lawrence River in Longueuil or Brossard. There’s still plenty of accommodation to choose from in these areas, prices are lower than downtown Montreal, and you can still get to the track via public transport or ride sharing. Downtown Montreal

Downtown is where the action is, if you want to do anything from shop for fashion, to visiting countless art galleries, to enjoying a night out on the lively Crescent Street. It might be that you’re heading to Montreal looking for the convenience of a business hotel where everything is provided, and there is plentiful quick transport at walking distance. If so, Delta Hotels by Marriott Montreal is an excellent choice. So too is the Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Centre-Ville, across the road from which is the three-star, mid-budget, L’Appartement Hotel.

You can get from downtown Montreal to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve via McGill Metro station. This is three stops from Station Berri-UQAM, which serves Circuit Gilles Villeneuve via a tunnel under the river, in a journey that should take around half an hour.

Old Montreal

Dwarfed by  Notre-Dame Basilica, Old Montreal is teeming with historical curiosities, but it’s also a great place to find the latest fusion-food delicacies, demonstrating the breadth of experience you can get in the oldest part of the city. 

For a taste of the history of Quebec’s capital, Old Montreal is a must-see, and there’s plenty of accommodation to suit all pockets. For a hotel with well-appointed rooms and a great view of the city and the St. Lawrence River, head to Hotel Place d’Armes, in the heart of the bustling old town. 

Metro Station Berri-UQAM is walking distance from most parts of Old Montreal, and is one stop away from Jean-Drapeau, from which you can disembark and walk to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, making the old town a remarkably convenient place to stay during Grand Prix weekend. 

Plateau Mont Royal & Outremont

Mont-Royal Park is a park on the main hill in Montreal, from which the city is thought to have got its name, and which has offered spectacular views of the city below it ever since the park’s inauguration in 1876. Heading down into Outremont, you’ll feel a youthful vibe from the local student population, and you’ll be able to soak up the culture in areas with large Greek and Jewish communities. 

If you want to spend time in this verdant area of Montreal, there is plentiful accommodation within easy transport access of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Mont Royal is the furthest from the track of all the districts of Montreal we have covered, and so you’ll need to spend around an hour on public transport in order to get to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
