Qatar Joins 14-Round Formula 2 calendar for 2024

The Formula 2 calendar will visit most of the same circuits at which it raced in 2023. The only exception is Zandvoort, with neither Formula 2 nor Formula 3 featuring as a support round at the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix.

Instead, Formula 2 will race in Qatar for the first time at Lusail Circuit. The Qatar round will be the penultimate race weekend of the 2024 Formula 2 season, coming one week before the Abu Dhabi finale.

Speaking about the 2024 calendar, Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel noted the increase of fly-away events on the schedule:

I’m very pleased to announce that there will be fourteen rounds and 28 races on the Formula 2 calendar in 2024. For next year, we will race in Qatar, which is a very exciting new venue. The final leg of the season will see Baku, Qatar and Abu Dhabi after the race weekend in Monza, making the 2024 calendar more balanced. We keep receiving interest from many promoters, and it’s great that we can add new tracks every season. Even though there will be more fly-away events in 2024, we continue to ensure the teams’ budget remains at a proper level.”

Who Will Race in Formula 2 in 2024?

24 drivers make up the 2024 Formula 2 grid, all of whom will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year’s champion Théo Pourchaire. None of the top four in last year’s F2 standings will return to the feeder series this year, with Victor Martins being last year’s highest points-scorer to make a return. The likes of Oliver Bearman, Enzo Fittipaldi and Dennis Hauger will also be taking part in the new season.

Six drivers on the 2024 Formula 2 grid are making the step up from Formula 3. That includes all of the top five finishers in the 2023 season. Reigning F3 champion Gabriel Bortoleto makes his F2 debut in Bahrain, as do Zak O’Sullivan and Pepe Marti, who finished second and fifth respectively in last year’s F3 standings. Paul Aron and Franco Colapinto also embark on their first full Formula 2 seasons, having made one-off appearances at last year’s season-closing Abu Dhabi round.

There will be a keen focus on 17-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the Mercedes junior driver who has been hugely impressive in his career to date. Having skipped Formula 3 and headed straight to F2 this year, Antonelli is tipped to be a contender for an F1 seat in 2025 if his impressive performances continue.

2024 Formula 3 Calendar

The 2024 Formula 3 calendar is mostly unchanged, taking place on the same ten Formula 1 race weekends as this year. New additions for 2023 – namely Melbourne and Monaco – are once again included on the 2024 schedule.

The 2024 F3 season begins at the Bahrain Grand Prix and concludes at Monza with the Italian Grand Prix in early September. Bruno Michel talked about the calendar for Formula 3’s sixth season:

In 2023, we introduced two new circuits – Melbourne and Monte Carlo – which held extremely successful events for Formula 3. I am very pleased to include them again in the 2024 calendar. We will have 10 rounds, across 3 continents, starting in Sakhir and ending in Monza, all events running alongside Formula 1. In a matter of five years, the FIA Formula 3 Championship has become a decisive category that features the best up-and-coming talents on their way to the top steps of motorsport.”

Porsche Supercup & F1 Academy Will Also Race Alongside Formula 1 in 2024

Aside from regional support races, two additional series are confirmed to be making appearances at Formula 1 weekends in 2024. In late 2022, it was confirmed that Porsche Supercup will remain on the F1 support schedule until at least 2030. The popular one-make series has been racing alongside Formula 1 for 30 years.

Meanwhile, the all-female F1 Academy will also race on Formula 1 weekends for the first time in 2024. It was confirmed in July 2023 that all 10 current Formula 1 teams will support one driver each in the F1 Academy series.
