Formula 1 has announced a weekend attendance of 302,000 at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix. 2024 is the third consecutive season in which total Austrian Grand Prix attendance; though this year’s figure is down slightly on the previous two seasons.

George Russell claimed an unexpected victory at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, after Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collided when fighting for the lead in the closing stages. It was Mercedes’ first F1 victory since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Fans trackside were treated to an extensive on-track line-up, with Formula 1 utilising its Sprint format for the third time in 2024. Action-packed Formula 2, Formula 3 and Porsche Supercup races were on the support bill, with another highlight being the Red Bull Legends Parade, featuring former F1 drivers like Emerson Fittipaldi, Gerhard Berger and David Coulthard driving classic F1 machinery.

2024 Austrian Grand Prix Attendance Drops Compared to 2023

The 2024 Austrian Grand Prix was the lowest-attended Red Bull Ring race since 2021 – though the margins were minimal. The weekend attendance figure is down by only 2,000 – or around 700 fans per day – compared to 2023, and is a drop of only 1,000 compared to the 2022 attendance figure.

Formula 1’s increasing popularity, paired with Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s successes, have helped to boost attendance figures in recent years at the team’s home track. In 2019 – at the last Austrian Grand Prix before the global pandemic – total attendance was 203,000. The next fully-attended race at the track three years later saw an attendance growth of 100,000.

The 2024 Austrian Grand Prix slots in as the third best-attended race weekend of the season to date. It ranks behind the Australian Grand Prix, which had a record-breaking 4-day attendance of 452,055, and behind the Canadian Grand Prix, which had 350,000 spectators in total.

Last year, the Austrian Grand Prix ended the season as the tenth best-attended event of the year, with a similar attendance level to other European races at Zandvoort in the Netherlands, Monza in Italy and the Hungaroring in Hungary.

Formula 1’s European Summer Tour Continues

Next on the agenda for Formula 1 in 2024 is the British Grand Prix – the last stage of this year’s first triple-header. The Silverstone race was the best-attended event in 2023. The British Grand Prix could well retain that slot in 2024, despite ticket sales for the event expected to be down on last year.

While Silverstone’s Managing Director Stuart Pringle cites Red Bull’s domination of F1 as the reason behind the lower-than-expected ticket sales, others were quick to point out that the event’s inflated ticket prices have prevented many fans from being able to attend. The British Grand Prix ranks as the fifth most expensive race to attend this year, according to our ticket price analysis.

From Silverstone, F1 continues its tour of mainland Europe over the summer, with events in Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy – all of which attracted attendances of over 300,000 in 2023.
