Formula 1 has reported a weekend attendance of 275,000 at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, making it Miami International Autodrome’s best-attended race weekend to date.
Formula 1 reports that 275,000 spectators attended over the 2024 Miami Grand Prix race weekend – the best attendance figure to date for the Miami Grand Prix.
While Max Verstappen dominated the Sprint and took pole for Sunday’s main race, a well-timed Safety Car aided McLaren’s Lando Norris to the first victory of his Formula 1 career.
The Miami Grand Prix had a first year attendance of 242,955 in 2022, with a race day crowd of over 85,000. That made it the biggest attendance on record at Hard Rock Stadium. One year later, attendance increased by around 30,000 with all grandstands, club and suite tickets – of which there were more in 2023 than in 2022 – selling out. Race day attendance increased by around 5,000.
Among the famous faces in attendance over the 2024 Miami Grand Prix weekend were former US President Donald Trump, Kendall Jenner, Charlotte Tilbury, Tommy Hilfiger, Camila Cabello and Ed Sheeran. Sheeran headlined one of the official Miami Grand Prix concerts at the Hard Rock Beach Club over the weekend and was treated to a Pirelli Hot Lap experience with Mercedes driver George Russell.
The Miami Grand Prix is the lowest-attended of the three stateside Formula 1 races. Last year’s United States Grand Prix – held at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas – attracted a crowd of 432,000, while the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix last November welcomed 315,000 fans over the four day event weekend.
Attendance Figures Continue Upward Trajectory
Aside from the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix – which is yet to publicly announce an official attendance figure – all F1 races so far this year have reported higher weekend attendances than the previous event at each circuit.
The season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix reported a weekend attendance of 100,000 (500 up on last year) while the Australian Grand Prix welcomed more than 452,000 fans over its 4-day weekend (an increase of 8,000 on last season).
The East Asian races also reported increased attendance figures. The Japanese Grand Prix welcomed 7,000 more fans than in 2023, despite last year’s race taking place only six months before the 2024 event. Meanwhile, the first Chinese Grand Prix in five years is believed to have welcomed around 180,000 fans in total. Zhou Guanyu’s presence on the grid helped to boost spectator numbers for F1’s return to Shanghai.
Formula 1 Returns to Europe
Next time out, Formula 1 returns to Europe for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It will be the first running of the event since 2022, after last year’s Imola race was cancelled due to local flooding.
Aside from June’s Canadian Grand Prix, Formula 1 races exclusively in Europe until the Singapore Grand Prix in late September. After the attendance highs of the post-pandemic era, it remains to be seen whether attendance figures will begin to wane in the sport’s European heartland in 2024.
